How does Focal work?
Focal is a productivity tool that allows users to self-initiate focus sessions by physically tapping their mobile device against an NFC hardware device. During active sessions, non-essential applications are blocked using Apple's Family Controls API. Users retain full control and can end sessions at any time with another tap.
Can Focal track my location or personal data?
No. Focal does not track your GPS location, access your personal emails, messages, photos, or files. Focal only collects session timing data (tap-in/tap-out times) during active sessions. Outside of sessions, no behavioral or usage data is collected. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.
How do I install and set up Focal?
- Download the Focal app from the Apple App Store
- Enter your organization's team code provided by your administrator
- Review and accept the enrollment screen
- Grant the required Screen Time permissions in iOS Settings
- Receive your NFC device from your organization
- Tap to start your first focus session!
Can I use Focal on my personal device?
Yes! Focal is designed with BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) privacy in mind. Focal operates only during active sessions and never accesses your personal data. You can uninstall the app or revoke permissions at any time. Your organization cannot remotely control or manage your device through Focal.
What happens if I need to make a call during a session?
Essential functions like emergency calling (911), the Phone app, Messages, and Settings are never blocked by Focal, even during active sessions. You can always make calls, send messages, and access critical device functions.
How do I end a focus session?
Simply open the Focal app and tap your device against the NFC device again. Your session will immediately end, and all app restrictions will be removed. You can end a session at any time - there are no penalties or restrictions.
How much does Focal cost?
Focal is free for individual users. Your organization pays a subscription fee based on team size. Contact us for pricing information if you're interested in Focal for your team.
